Many articles that talk about body shape group you into different types of fruit; you are either an apple, pear, banana, etc. These classifications did not really fit my body shape so I found a website that has a useful tool that you can use to calculate your body type.
Go to http://www.shopyourshape.com/calculate-your-body-shape.html and enter the measurements of your bust, waist, and hips. It calculates your body type and gives you tips on how to dress for your shape.

For example, after entering my measurements I found that my body type is a spoon. I was given following tips for dressing my body type.
Dresses for Spoon Body Types:
Choose dresses with empire waists and A-line skirts. Look for dresses with cuts or embellishments that draw attention and add volume (or the illusion of volume) to your bust and shoulders. Stay away from dresses that have excessive pleating or fabric below the waistline and instead choose silhouettes that skim your figure.
Tops for Spoon Body Types:
Empire waist tops are the most flattering on a spoon figure because they emphasize the smallest part of your torso. Do not choose tops with excessive fabric beneath the empire waist, instead choose silhouettes that are more A-line and gently skim your figure. Choose tops with wide necklines and embellishments that draw attention and add volume (or the illusion of volume) to your bust and shoulders. When selecting jackets, choose ones with a structured shoulder and nipped-in waist that gently skim away from the body and end at your hipbone.
Bottoms for Spoon Body Types:
Look for A-line skirts or skirts that skim your body. Choose pants with simple pockets or no pockets at all. Stick with boot cut or trouser cut jeans. Never wear pants with a tapered leg and go with a mid-rise waist.
Accessories for Spoon Body Types:
Chunky necklaces and earrings, padded bras, body shapers (like Spanx) that trim your belly.
When I think of the items in my closet that I gravitate toward many of them have the characteristics of clothing they recommend. I feel better in those pieces of clothing because they flatter my shape!
These simple tips can help you to look and feel better no matter what size or shape your body is.
